Exhibition Opening Reception: Abstracting the Seam Sunday, May 12, 3-5 pm Celebrate with the artists Shannon Kerrigan, Christopher Michlig, Patrick McDonough, Sarah Nishiura, Andrew Rigsby, Hans Peter Sundquist, and Stacia Yeapanis.

The group exhibition Abstracting the Seam surveys the ways in which needleworking strategies permeate the painting, collage, video, textile, and installation art by seven contemporary artists whose work addresses the kaleidoscopic urban experience. Using straightforward pattern, line, and repetition common in textiles, the artists featured combine hard-edged configurations with soft material in an attempt to define a physical, personal space within the sub/urban landscape.

This event is free and open to the public. This exhibition will be on view from May 12 through September 15, 2013.

AMY LASKIN, Garden Goddesses, New Paintings Exhibition Dates: May 17 - June 29, 2013 Artist's Reception: Friday, May 17, 5:00 - 8:00 P.M.

In many ways, the artist's paintings call to mind the court paintings of artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Italian, 1527-1593). Laskin's Garden Goddesses paintings combine the lush phantasmagoric, Jamaican landscape in which she lives with the human figure. And, symbolizing the personal impact of that natural landscape, she portrays both its bounty and beauty as female entities, representing and embodying the naturalness of their surroundings, clothed in garments befitting the elegance of women of aristocratic lineage. Soaring above all else, however, are the personified landscapes, an encapsulation of a paradise and a people for whom these paintings speak universally with great fondness and awe.

Performance & Discussion: NeueBody research by Lee Blalock Saturday, May 18th 3-5 PM

Join us for a new performance by new media artist Lee Blalock. Titled "Notation for Neue Movement Fidelity, No.1", the piece is inspired by old stereo test records that the artist superimposes onto the body as a test of will, control, and new (neue) movement vocabulary. Using fabricated sculptural appendages as drawing prosthetics and physical restraints, dancers will create a document of this test in the form of a large scale drawing. The drawing is performed with the accompaniment of live sound created using custom software and hardware while channeling the eclectic musical arrangement of the original stereo fidelity tests. The drawing will be included in Blalock's current solo exhibition, "Neue", on view at the Hyde Park Art Center until June 23rd. This performance is supported by a School of the Art Institute Faculty Enrichment Grant and in held in conjunction with the current exhibition Neue.
